Singapore to Johor Bahru by Train

Johore Strait separates Singapore and Malaysia, and it only takes a 5-minute train ride to cross it from Woodlands SG to Johor Bahru, and for just SGD 5!

There are a lot of bus liners that service Singapore to Johor Bahru, but taking the train makes you save a ton of time, skipping the traffic and sparing you from the hassle of alighting the bus to get through both SG and Malaysian Immigration. The Immigration and Cutoms are situated in the train station which makes it really convenient for passengers to cross the border.

Train Schedule: Woodlands to/from JB Sentral

The only train servicing SG to JB route is the Shuttle Tebrau operated by KTM, Malaysia’s national train operator. You can hop on a train from SG to JB at “Woodlands Train Checkpoint.” Below are the train schedules from/to Woodlands Singapore and JB Sentral Johor Bahru as of April 10, 2019.

Purchase Train Tickets for Woodlands Singapore to/from JB Sentral

I had an extra day to spare during my recent birthday trip and thought of checking out some spots in Johor Bahru. It was a week day and rook my chance of walking in the train station to buy a train ticket at the station counter.
Walk-in one-way train ticket price from Woodlands SG to JB Sental Johor Bahru is at $5.00 (SGD). I presented my passport upon purchase and quickly got an issued ticket, and went straight up the platform entrance. The gates open 30 minutes before the train departs from Woodlands SG, and from this side, each passenger passes through both Singapore and Malaysian immigrations before hopping on the train. The train only took 5 minutes to arrive in JB Sentral Station. And before exploring Johor Bahru, I booked my return ticket at JB Sentral Station for MYR 5.00 (Php70).
Ticket sales close 15 minutes before train departure for over the counter purchases.

JB Sentral Ticket Counter

You may also book a roundtrip ticket online through the KTM website, https://www.ktmb.com.my/.

Roundtrip ticket price online is at MYR 32, which is more expensive than buying tickets at the train counters – SGD5.00 from Woodlands SG to JB Sentral +MYR5.00 from JB Sentral to Woodlands SG.
Booking train tickets online is highly advised though when traveling during the weekend and holidays when the volume of passengers going to and from SG/Johor Bahru is high. Tickets can be purchased online for train schedules departing at least 4 hours from the time of booking. Different payment options, including credit cards, are accepted when purchasing e-tickets.

If you are departing from Singapore, tickets bought online need to be validated at the ticketing office situated at the ground floor of the station. Just present your booking receipt with your passport at the ticketing counter. Then after validation, passengers may proceed to the second floor to queue up for immigration. The gates open 30minutes before departure, passing through both SG and Malaysian immigration.
